Colon Cleansing: A Layperson's Guide

Colon Cleansing Guide

Colon cleansing can simply be defined as a procedure that detoxifies the intestines, eradicates parasites, and prevents toxicity. Cleansing the intestines is necessary to maintain colon health, as the procedure helps get rid of harmful toxic substances from the body and restores the peristalsis movement (a wavelike process that contracts the muscles of the alimentary canal and helps move food particles along) without affecting other organs. The main purpose of colon cleansing is to improve the absorption of essential nutrients, and facilitating the excretion of waste and harmful products from the intestines.

Colon health deteriorates when the colon does not function properly. (Due to blockage of waste material in the intestines) The harmful toxic substances cannot get out of the body, and starts circulating back into the digestive system. This results in multiple health problems, like abdominal cramps, constipation, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), acne, bloating, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), acidity, and even skin and hair problems. Ancient medical science like Ayurveda believes that almost all health ailments are caused due to indigestion and poor colon health.

Colon Detoxification

Colon detoxification, as discussed, is the process that clears out, neutralizes or transforms toxins from the body, and also helps in dissolving excess mucus, and relieves congestion. Many such toxins come from diet, medicines, and harmful environmental exposure for a long time. Substances such as free radicals, fats (particularly oxidized fats and cholesterol), and other irritating molecules also act as toxic material. Improper digestion, weak colon, altered liver or biliary function, and poor health of kidneys, etc may all aid in increasing toxicity.

Colon detoxification involves changes in diet and lifestyle that ensures the intake of non-toxic edibles, and improves digestion. Turning away from chemicals; from food or other additives, refined flour items, sugary food, caffeine, intake of alcohol or tobacco in any form, and many medicines, minimizes toxin accumulation in the intestines.

While detoxifying the colon, it is also essential to include probiotics in the diet that replenishes the intestinal flora. The excretory system is a drainage system of the body that flushes out body waste along with toxins, and keeps the body healthy. If there is no regular bowel movement (at least once a day), it is likely to have many health effects in future.

The human body has not changed much in the past millennia, but diet has. Junk food, canned food, packed food, foods with preservatives, intake of hormonal supplements, antibiotics are constantly being ingested into the body. This overloads the intestines and makes them overwork, and eventually they function improperly. In the US, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths.

Colon cleansing saves people who have fewer bowel movements who would otherwise be prone to potentially dangerous diseases and ailments. Colon health can be kept at its optimum level by performing regular colon cleansing. Simply drinking a large amount of liquid (preferably lukewarm water, fruit juices, and dark, green and leafy vegetables' extract) may work. However, it depends upon the health care provider to fix the herbs, diet or other method of colon cleansing.
