Colon Problems

There are a number of problems that can affect the colon with a variety of symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to potentially life threatening painful episodes caused by ill health, adverse conditions and serious diseases. Learning how to avoid them is the way to a healthier, potentially longer and happier life.

colon problemsThere are far too many different types of condition to do justice to in a single, very long article. So to make things more easily absorbable, I have divided the major conditions into separate articles that explain in more detail what they are and how they affect the digestive tract.

Here is a summary overview of some of the more common or serious problems that I will be explaining more thoroughly in each separate page.

Polyps

A colon polyp is considered to be potentially serious and is an important diagnosis to be made for two reasons. The first is that it may possibly become cancerous at any point in time. The second is that it could represent an early sign of cancer forming in this area of the body.

Furthermore, the presence of one or more polyps may cause certain symptoms that could bring discomfort while leading to further illnesses.

Diverticulitis: What is it?

Small pouches of old fecal matter are forming in your large intestine. The fecal matter that is deposited in those pouches is essentially toxic material being stored in your body. This condition is definitely not good for your health but the good news is that you can do something to avoid this happening.

Crohns Disease

Individuals suffering from Crohn's disease have a condition in which the body's defence system can overreact to infection, especially those caused by particular strains of unfriendly bacteria that may result in inflammation occurring in the large intestines.

This type of reaction, which is generally known to be a controlled reaction, has the potential to go haywire in people with Crohn’s disease. In some instances, this disease can be observed through its symptoms that are explained in the dedicated article on the subject (see below).

Colon Cancer and its Prevention

Colon cancer is the growth of abnormal cell inside the area of the large intestines and it is one of the leading causes of death in both men and women. Thankfully there are several steps you can take to help you avoid this form of cancer. The key is to start as early as possible to take the steps to prevent this leading cause of death.

Infections

Your large intestinal area is teeming with a variety of different bacteria, but there is usually no need to let this concern you. Most of the bacteria that are in your colon are supposed to be there.

The friendly bacteria is what you body uses to help you digest the food that you eat. However, sometimes other less welcome forms of bacteria can get into your colon and that is when you need to be concerned.

Their presence can result in infections that occasionally require medical intervention, so it is in your interests to take steps to maintain a healthy balance of friendly bacteria and crowd out any infiltration by the strains that you don't want in there.

Defects

The large intestine is one of the most important organs in your body and as with any of the organs in the body, things can occasionally go wrong when the colon is forming before birth. In addition, there are some defects that can arise after birth.

There is quite a lot to learn about congenital defects of this organ and while it can get rather detailed and medical in nature, there are some aspects of this type of problem that can be more easily explained.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis commonly results in pain in the abdominal region and diarrhea that is usually mixed with blood. The blood is a sign of more than one ulcer.

These and other symptoms may be severe or mild depending on the type of ulcer and how advanced it has become. Ulcerative colitis is a condition that can have an adverse affect on health, making it important to gain an understanding of how it can form and its symptoms so you can do what is necessary to avoid it where possible.

Nutritional Deficiency Due To Disorders

The intestines can be affected by a variety of disorders that can result in nutritional deficiencies. Some of the disorders can even result in malnutrition if left untreated.

This is one area that is well worth it to find out more about nutritional deficiency that can be due to disorders or diseases of this part of the body.
