Colonics
A colonic, in layperson's terminology, is an enema given to achieve the best colon health. Enema or colonic is also called as colon irrigation or colon hydrotherapy. The procedure involves introducing a long tube inside the intestines, and medicated water is induced drop-by-drop through the tube. The medicated or plain water circulating around the colon helps to loosen the hard fecal matter, and neutralizes toxic substances. The water is also reported to support the large intestine by restoring the peristalsis. The improved peristalsis then excretes all the fecal matter out of the intestines.
The procedure of colonic is not painful at all; in fact, a few people do enjoy colonic procedure! A colonic is not a surgical procedure but it is a special way to massage the intestines. Although, colonic procedure does not fall under any medical process, one can easily find an expert who can perform the colonic procedure to get the best possible colon health. Before colonic procedure, the expert will explain about the correct posture, and the dos and don'ts, etc. A soft tube is inserted inside the intestines through the rectum, and then the water is introduced slowly. At the same time, the massage may be executed so that fecal matter comes out without any hassles.
The procedure of colonic may take approximately half an hour. However, it is advised that the patient should undergo a full colon cleanse before the enema is given. Normal colon cleansing can be achieved by drinking plenty of fluids (preferably lukewarm water), and eating very lightly just before the therapy. Once the procedure is successfully performed, the patient is advised to take rest, and to adopt a very light food diet. Avoidance of raw vegetables for a few days is necessary. Probiotics would be okay to restore the friendly bacteria in the colon.
The colonic is quite safe in almost all individuals with a normal intestinal structure. However, colonic is contraindicated in patients with obstruction or perforation of intestines. The equipment used for colon cleansing is disinfected and sterilized to achieve the best results, thus assuring optimum colon health. The ingredients used in colonics are not habit-forming, and they do not harm the intestines. There is nothing to be embarrassed about the procedure, since the experts performing colonics do it several times a day.
Colonics do not have any major adverse effects. A few patients report having loose motions after an enema, which is quite normal as this symptom does not stay for a long duration. Most patients can move on with their normal routine after a colonic. Nevertheless, there are chances of friendly bacteria being washed away, but it can be corrected by taking some probiotics. In fact, colonic is still essential since colon cleansing can enhance the growth of friendly bacteria.
Enema is probably the quickest way to achieve optimum colon health without affecting other bodily functions. In alternative medicinal sciences like Ayurveda, enema (using medicated herbal solution) is one of the best treatments to cure several health ailments such as obesity, acne, indigestion, arthritis, constipation etc.
